Tullahoma schools will not arm teachers

Teachers will not be carrying guns in school in Tullahoma after the state legislature cleared the way to arm educators on school grounds during their recent session.
In a statement sent to parents from Tullahoma Director of Schools Dr. Catherine Stephens, the school system made it clear that they will rely on the network of armed School Resource Officers for school security rather than allowing teachers to carrying guns.
“The Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation allowing teachers or staff to carry firearms in schools as long as specific criteria and conditions have been met,” Stephens said in her message to parents. “Since the passing of this legislation, many have reached out, voicing their opinions, questions, and concerns.”
Stephens said after hearing the concerns and studying the new law, it has been determined that teachers will not be carrying guns on school grounds.
“At Tullahoma City Schools, the safety of our students and staff members is a focus and a priority,” she said. “We are thankful for such a strong and longstanding partnership with the Tullahoma Police Department. We are incredibly grateful that our schools have a School Resource Officer (SRO). These armed law enforcement officers are highly trained to handle emergency and crisis situations.”
With that in mind, Stephens made it clear that Tullahoma City Schools will not be exercising the option now afforded to schools across Tennessee.
“TCS leadership does not intend for faculty or staff to carry concealed handguns on campuses,” She revealed. “The district’s focus is to ensure that all our students, staff, and faculty are provided with a safe learning environment so students can thrive within our schools. Our faculty and staff are committed to supporting the educational journey of our students. We will continue to trust our partnership with our police department and SROs.”
