Longtime Board of Zoning Appeals member Lowell Duke retained his appointment to the County Board of Zoning Appeals in an 11-7 vote at the May 14 County Commission Meeting.

Sharing the nomination with Duke was Anastasia Gonzales, nominated by Commissioner Missy DeFord.

Duke was nominated by Commissioner Laura Nettles.

Gonzales, a local businesswomen, told the commission that she has experience in construction.

“I think I’d be perfect for this position,” she said.

Duke, a former commissioner, said that he recognizes the struggles of being a public servant.

“My position today, if you folks appoint me, I’d be willing to serve,” Duke said.

The appointment was made at as a remedy at the recommendation ad hoc committee to resolve the situation of several members’ terms expiring this year. Duke being the longest serving of the members was decided to be the first to roll off the board with the others following over the coming years.

The seven commissioners who voted for Gonzales were DeFord, Tim Morris, Terry Hershman, Dennis Hunt, Tim Stubblefield, Lynn Seborn and Frank Watkins. The remaining commissioners voted for Duke.

The board of zoning appeals hears requests for variances to county zoning regulations and approves zoning special exceptions. It is the final authority on zoning short of a court order.
