The Hickerson Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire this weekend that left two residents injured and displaced.
The volunteer fire department was dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire on Sunday, June 2, and upon arrival of the first engine the officer reported heavy fire and significant amount of ammunition going off.
“The officer-in-charge immediately requested mutual aid from Tullahoma Fire, as well as AEDC Fire and Emergency Services for manpower and additional water supply,” fire department officials said. “Automatic aid units who also responded were Hillsboro VFD, New Union VFD, North Coffee VFD, Summitville VFD, and the Coffee County Rescue Squad for rehab.”
Firemen made an interior attack and battled the blaze for over an hour before extinguishing the fire. No firefighter injuries were reported, yet both of the occupants of the home sustained injuries. One of the occupants was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, while the other occupant sustained burns and was airlifted to Vanderbilt for treatment.
“It is also unfortunate to report multiple pets did perish in the fire,” the statement read. “Cause of the fire is still under investigation at the time of this release.”
Hickerson VFD thanked their automatic aide partners, as well as mutual aid partners for their assistance in taking down the fire.
