The Highland Yacht Club saw a good turn out to their fall regatta this past weekend. Vice Commander Miles Bradford said approximately forty five people attended the event, with fifteen of them being competitors. Several families camped there on the grounds. The yacht club provided meals, cooking under their pavilion.
Both adult races and youth sailing activities were held. Eight boats competed in the adult open and five boats participated in the youth sailing. Several of the youngsters that participated in the club’s Kid’s Youth Day earlier this summer came back for the regatta.
Despite periods of dead calm on both Saturday and Sunday, and rain on Sunday, five races were completed. Scott Klein of Chattanooga took first place in the dinghy open class. David Pilcher of Sewanee won the cruiser open class. All of the youth participants earned certificates.
Three students from the University of the South attended on Sunday. They are planning to start a sailing club with the university and spoke with several members of the yacht club for advice. The students found plenty of advice and support for their endeavor. They will host a Learn to Sail event themselves on October 6 at Woods Reservoir.
