A 39-year-old Manchester man remains in Franklin County Jail after being arrested on Oct. 22 for vehicular homicide and DUI in connection with a fatal wreck at 10 a.m. in the 1700 block of Decherd Boulevard.

A press release from the Decherd Police Department said that the driver of a 2016 Ford Taurus died at the Southern Tennessee Regional Health System hospital after being extricated from the vehicle by the Decherd Fire Department.

The deceased driver has been identified as 76-year-old Michael J. Smith from Cowan, according to Decherd police reports.

Police Chief Kenneth Griffin said that the Tennessee Highway Patrol has been called in to handle the investigation.

The press release said that Devin Wayne Bohanan was later arrested for vehicular homicide, DUI (second offense), driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.

The press release said that Bohanan, in a 2016 Nissan Rogue, was involved in an earlier crash at the intersection of Bypass Road and Dinah Shore Boulevard and fled the scene, traveling north toward the Decherd city limits at a high rate of speed. The Rogue struck Smith’s Taurus while it was exiting the Duck River Electric Membership Corp. property, the press release said.

Bohanan was injured and was transported to the hospital for his injuries, according to the press release.

His bond has been set at $390,000, and he is to appear in court on Dec. 16 at 8 a.m.

The Winchester Police Department has pending charges against Bohanan for the initial crash that occurred in Winchester’s jurisdiction, the press release said.
