Knights end Wildcat season in first round

The red-hot Wildcats came into the 2024 Class 5A State Playoffs winning five of their last six games, but a loss Friday night brought their hot streak and season to a close, losing 23-14 to the Nolensville Knights.
“They never peaked. I mean this team continued to get better week in and week out. I wish we had a few more weeks to let everybody see that,” Tullahoma head coach Coy Sisk said regarding his team.
“Us as a coaching staff we see it, me as a coach I see it. This team has yet to peak yet, and I really was thinking tonight would be the night.”
After securing a 14-13 lead heading into the half, from a 22-yard Marvancy Johnson touchdown run and an 11-yard pass connection between Alex Bobo and Lucas Reed, Tullahoma did not score for the rest of the game.
“We definitely could have played better across the board, but all in all you have to protect the football. All right, that’s one thing, and to also just be able to make plays when you need to make plays,” said coach Sisk regarding what led to his team’s loss.
Johnson rattled off runs of 34 and 15 early in the fourth quarter to get his team down to Nolensville’s 30-yard line, trailing by two at 16-14. The next two plays were runs for gains of one and negative two, forcing a third and long, which then led to a costly turnover.
Tullahoma, trying to force the issue, threw an interception with 8:46 left in the contest, leaving less and less room to stamp their ticket into the second round and a rematch with Shelbyville as the clock continued to tick away.
The Knights capitalized on the Wildcats’ mistake, capping off an eight-play drive with a 34-yard touchdown run by their running back Andrew Ryan, who found a hole in the right side of Tullahoma’s defensive line, making the score 23-14.
The Wildcats scraped together a solid drive following Ryan’s touchdown, setting up a 38-yard field goal try to bring the game back to a one-score game with 2:26 remaining, but the kick was blocked, and the Wildcats season was then over. With the win, the Knights avenged their season-ending loss to the Wildcats last season as they were dumped from the playoffs 10-0. The win also gives Nolensville a 4-3 edge in the all-time series.
“I’m real proud of these guys. They are a fun group to be around, and they are also a hardworking group, and as you can tell by the looks on their faces they do not like to lose,” said coach Sisk following the loss.
The feeling that will hang eerily over this football season in Tullahoma as we wait for a new season to come again is the feeling of “what could have been. If the Wildcats were able to keep their lead at the half and go on to beat the Knights, it would have set them up to take on the team they lost to in a thriller in their regular-season finale, losing to Shelbyville 28-27.
Capping off an incredible year Tullahoma’s lead running back, Johnson, finished the season rushing for 1,500 yards, averaging 7.1 yards a carry, and scoring 18 touchdowns in the process.
“Marvancy will be the first one to tell you that he can’t do it by himself, the offensive front starts it. The offensive front throughout the season has gotten better, better, and better. So a lot of that success goes to them, and then fancy being fancy he does what he does after the fact,” said Sisk regarding Johnson.
The junior Johnson will walk onto Tullahoma’s campus next year for his senior season, and after a stellar year and the stinging loss of an early playoff exit, there is no telling what he and the Wildcats plan to do when they take the field next August.
