Tullahoma Lions Club celebrates 80 years of service to the community

The Tullahoma Lions Club proudly celebrates 80 years of dedicated service to the community, continuing its legacy of leadership, vision care, and humanitarian efforts since its founding on Feb. 26, 1945.

Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest voluntary service organization with over 1.4 million members in 200+ countries, has long been committed to serving those in need. The Tullahoma Lions Club has embodied this mission through various impactful projects, with a special focus on aiding the visually impaired. Since 1955, the club has provided vision screenings for Tullahoma City Schools, funded eye exams and glasses for those in need, and facilitated advanced procedures such as cataract surgeries and corneal transplants through the Lions Middle Tennessee Service.

Beyond its sight programs, the club has played a vital role in the local community. Over the years, it has:

•        Funded uniforms for the Tullahoma High School (THS) band.

•        Led a fundraising campaign in 1982 to purchase the first computers for Tullahoma Schools.

•        Constructed concession stands and restrooms at the THS football stadium.

•        Sponsored local youth programs, including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Babe Ruth League.

•        Hosted an annual Christmas party for underprivileged children.

Fundraising has been key to sustaining these initiatives. The club’s long-standing projects include operating concessions at THS football games, hosting the prestigious Lions Bowl high school football event, and selling brooms, mops, and other goods to support its sight programs.

In addition to its local efforts, the Tullahoma Lions Club has expanded its reach by chartering new Lions Clubs in Manchester, Tullahoma, and beyond. Several of its members have gone on to serve as District Governors and even as Tullahoma Mayors.

As the club looks ahead to the next 80 years, it remains committed to its mission of service, with continued support from the Tullahoma community.
