School food shortage sparks public outcry

Prior to spring break, a social media post made the rounds alleging that some Tullahoma High School students were not served lunch due to the cafeteria running out of food.

In the social media post, a mother of THS student said she received a message from her daughter that the school had no food for them to eat. The mother said she called the school and complained on the children’s behalf and asked if she could bring them food. She said she was told she could bring her daughter food, which she said she was able to bring both her daughter and friends food.

“This is unacceptable for our kids to go without food when we get a grant to feed them,” the post read. “I was a (mad) mom and if your kids didn’t eat today you should be too.”

The post would later be shared on the Tullahoma Talk group on Facebook, where it received over 400 comments, including comments from parents who said their children confirmed the post in question.

The News reached out to Tullahoma City Schools for a response and received the following statement:

“All students were provided a meal option, and no student was turned away from receiving a lunch. The images captured on social media are after the lunch service ended and do not accurately reflect the lunch time options available at Tullahoma High School on Thursday. At the top of the photograph, students are visibly seen seated and eating after picking up their meal.

“The day before any major break, each cafeteria team plans meals with the hopes of not having excessive amounts remaining. On a positive note, more students were in attendance and, as a result, the main meal options were limited from the usual menu, and those options ran out prior to the last few students going through the line. The cafeteria staff provided fast pass (grab and go) meals on the spot for the students who did not get the pre-planned options. The cafeteria staff had to pivot to make another meal option for the last students through the line and they ensured that all students had the option to receive a meal.”
