Tullahoma softball’s 11-game win streak snapped
GRAY DEYOSports Writer
The Tullahoma softball team won three of their four games from April 2-9, with wins over Siegel, Franklin County, and Marshall County High School, with their lone loss coming to Giles County.
Siegel
Tullahoma had 14 hits on April 2 against Siegel and they needed every one of them, as they went on to win in walk off fashion 11-10.
The opposing Lady Stars had a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Wildcats put on their rally caps and got things started with a Madison Goad with a two-run home run shot to center field. Her home run tied the game at 7-7 going into the last inning of the game.
Goad is currently putting together not only the best season of her career, but she is boasting one of the best seasons by a player in Tennessee. She is currently batting .648 with 12 HRs, and 47 RBIs.
Siegel, in the top of the seventh, scored three runs after a double, and a couple of walks, leading Tullahoma having to score three runs in three outs if they wanted to keep the game alive.
The Lady Wildcats’ first three hitters in the bottom frame—Brinley Gillam, Aleigh Raby, and Ellie Simpson— all got on base to start the inning with two singles and an error. This led to Miaha Johnson taking her at-bat with the bases loaded and she capitalized. She ripped a single on a line drive to left field, and scored in two runs, making the game now 10-9. Kylee Holt then worked another walk for the ‘Cats and juiced the bases once again. Unfortunately, the result of the loaded bases was not the same as it was when Johnson stepped up to the plate. The Lady Wildcats got two outs, one from a fielder’s choice and one from an attempt to steal home and tie the game. This left Kaitlynn Gattis as Tullahoma’s final chance to stay in the game.
She worked a 3-1 count and then belted a ball to left field. Holt and Addyson Norman hustled around the base passes, as Holt tied the game with a touch at home, and Norman represented the winning run when she touched home.
Gattis’ double to left field walked off and won the game for the Lady Wildcats.
Franklin County
It was Tullahoma’s second meeting with Franklin County, winning their previous game on March 18, 10-3. They added another dominant performance in the second go-round against Franklin County, winning 15-0.
Pitching for Tullahoma Amaya Sharp pitched all six innings and only allowed two hits, and also got six strikeouts.
Offensively for the Lady Wildcats they really got cooking late, scoring 12 of their 15 runs of the game in the sixth and seventh inning. Three Wildcats were tied for most hits in the game with three a piece—Goad, Holt, and Norman. The shutout win for Tullahoma marks their second of the year, and it is the third time they have scored 15 or more runs.
Marshall County
The Lady Wildcats were in another one run game against the Lady Tigers of Marshall County, as they went on to gut out a 9-8 win on April 8.
The Wildcats trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and needed another walk-off if they wanted to keep their then current 10 game win streak alive.
The Lady Wildcats just as they did against Siegel in their late-game rally got their first three runners on base—Holt, Norman, and Goad. Norman hit an RBI double on her at bat, so with no outs, Gattis who hit a walk-off double against Siegel, had an opportunity to give the ‘Cats another walk-off win.
She stepped to the plate and belted a ball into the outfield just as she did against Siegel. But this time the ball went over the fence.
A frenzy ensued on the field as Gattis crossed home plate, and they celebrated her three-run walk-off homer.
Giles
The Lady Widcats’ win streak unfortunately came to an end against Giles on April 9, losing 15-5.
The ‘Cats just could not seem to find their footing in this one, with Giles’ offense unleashing a 17-hit day, helping them grab the “W”.
Tullahoma will be in action next against Central Magnet on April 10, who they previously beat this year on March 25 by a score of 13-3.
