Police warn of phishing scam

It has been brought to the attention of local law enforcement that an email scam stating that “you had an item on the Planning Commission Agenda” (and in some cases, other city board agendas) that requires a payment is being sent to local residents and developers.

This is not an official email, it is a scam, the Tullahoma City website warned. Do not open any emails you may receive that state you owe funds or have an open invoice. This phishing attempt is targeting individuals who have recently had a project on a board’s public agenda. It will likely have an attachment labeled “INVOICE” Do not open that attachment. These emails have been reported to the Tullahoma Police Department and our IT team, as well as City Administration.

The email will be very convincing and appear to be an official notice from the Planning and Development Department or another City Department.  It will have real information regarding the exact project you had on the agenda, stating that you now owe a large amount of fees for that project. The City of Tullahoma does not email invoices out to anyone. There will never be any invoices emailed to you for additional fees for any transaction with the city.

Note that email from City staff will always have @tullahomatn.gov on the email address (notice there is not a dot between Tullahoma and TN).  Look closely at the sender’s email address before opening an email. If it is ANY different from that ending, please delete it. Do not open it, and please do not forward it.  If you have already opened the attachment, please consider changing passwords and utilizing any anti-virus software on your device.
