National Kids and Pets Day is an opportunity to celebrate the love we share with our children and their furry friends. Yet it is also a critical reminder of the dangers they face in vehicles, particularly as families prepare to drive for spring or summer vacations.

“It’s our responsibility to protect those who rely on us,” said Megan Cooper, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Never leave kids or pets in a hot car, even for a moment, and always ensure they are properly restrained during a drive. Simple precautions can prevent tragic outcomes and save lives.”

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) database, of the car seats inspected in 2023, 74% were not used properly or incorrectly installed. Additionally, 25% of children move to booster seats too soon, and 93.6% transition to a seat belt too soon.

•     Install your car seat correctly. Review instructions and video tutorials.

•     Get your car seat inspected. Find a Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station near you to meet with a trained CPS Technician for advice on using your child’s car seat properly.

•     Ensure safety belts fit properly every time. The placement of the safety harness or seat belt can be critical.

Traveling with Pets

Traveling with pets can be a rewarding experience, but it is important to plan ahead to ensure their comfort and safety. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water and pack their favorite toys or blankets to keep them relaxed during the journey. Frequent breaks for exercise and bathroom needs are essential, especially on long trips. Most importantly, always ensure your pet is properly secured during a drive to prevent distractions and keep everyone safe in case of sudden stops or accidents.

Pet Restraint Tips

•     Never in the Front Seat: Avoid letting dogs ride in the front seat, especially if airbags are equipped, as they can be seriously injured in a crash.

•     Crates: Crates are the safest option, especially for large dogs, as they can be securely anchored in the back seat or cargo area.

•     Harnesses and Seat Belts: If a crate is not possible, a pet harness and seatbelt can be used, but ensure they are properly designed and tested for pet safety.

•     Back Seat or Cargo Area: The back seat or cargo area is the safest place for dogs, as it is further away from airbags and less likely to be a distraction while driving.
