Second tornado confirmed in Tullahoma area

The National Weather Service has found evidence that an EF-1 strength tornado touched down between Estill Springs and Tullahoma Sunday afternoon, marking the second tornado to hit the Greater Tullahoma area in a week.

The confirmation of the May 25th tornado came after elements of the NWS did an investigation of damage left behind by the strong Sunday afternoon storm. The system ended up falling trees and downing power lines, leaving a large swath of Franklin County without power.

The Sunday storm was rated an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fajita Scale with peak winds at 93 miles per hour. Investigators estimate the tornado stayed on the ground for almost seven miles and was the width of a football field. The tornado touched down at 4 p.m. west of Estill Springs in Franklin County and lifted north of Estill Springs seven minutes later. The survey summary noted that the twister touched down east of Bluegill Grill and Marina and produced sporadic tree damage between Holiday Drive and Awalt Road. The tornado then continued southeast causing more tree damage along Rock Creek Road after crossing Highway 41A.

The Sunday storm system left large parts of Franklin County without power as the Duck River Electric Membership Corporation rushed to restore over 1,200 customers in Franklin County alone.

The Sunday event was the second tornado confirmed in the Coffee County area in five days as an EF-0 tornado hit near the Coffee-Bedford line last Tuesday. That storm reached winds of 85 miles per hour, stayed on the ground one mile and was 150 yards wide, causing damage to a farm in its path.
