Blood drive slated for Shelbyville native
This summer, the Shelbyville community is hosting a special blood drive in honor of Kaemey Young, a Shelbyville native who is currently battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Community members are invited to take part—every donation can make a difference.
The “In Honor of Kaemey Young Blood Drive” will be held at the First Baptist Church – Shelbyville, located at 304 Depot St. in Shelbyville from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19.
Kaemey’s journey began in late October 2024 when she developed unexplained hives. What started as a routine visit to the allergist quickly became a life-changing diagnosis. After her parents insisted on additional bloodwork—despite no immediate cause for concern—results revealed critically low white blood cell counts. Further testing and a bone marrow biopsy led to the diagnosis on Nov. 6, 2024.
Since then, Kaemey has undergone more than 30 chemotherapy injections, nearly 20 surgeries, numerous blood transfusions, and has spent over 45 nights in the hospital. Despite these challenges, she remains resilient and hopeful, bolstered by her deep faith and the unwavering support of her family, friends and community.
“We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming love, prayers and support our family has received since Kaemey’s diagnosis,” says Kaemey’s mother Kayla Young. “Every kind word, every act of care and every prayer has wrapped us in comfort and strength.”
Now entering her fourth cycle of treatment, Kaemey’s family wishes to pay it forward by encouraging others to give the gift of life through blood donation.
The upcoming blood drive, hosted by Kaemey’s older sister, Kaegan, is a chance for the community to come together in support of Kaemey and others facing serious medical challenges. Blood donations are in constant need, and just one pint can save multiple lives.
“Our prayer this season is not only for healing, but to be a blessing to others walking a similar road. Having seen our own child in desperate need, we understand how vital every pint collected truly is,” Kayla says. “We are especially proud of Kaegan – her love and compassion for her sister shines so brightly.”
All presenting donors will receive a $15 amazon e-gift card and will be automatically entered for a chance to win a $7,000 gift card. See RedCrossBlood.org for details and terms.
