City cuts the ribbon at Joe Moon Field

The Tullahoma Parks and Recreation Department, along with city officials and members of the Joe Moon Foundation, met at Waggoner Park Saturday, June 7, to officially dedicate the field formerly known as Waggoner 3 to its new name: Joe Moon Field.

The short ceremony took place prior to the first game on the Play Local travel ball tournament, which will now become an annual event at Waggoner Park called “The Joe Moon Classic.”

The 50/70 field has a brand new scoreboard and foul poles, along with multiple improvements by the parks department on the turf, infield, painting the structures, and new fencing. More improvements are slated for the field soon to include new foul ball netting, bleachers, and a renovated press box.

Back in October, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen gave the thumbs up to both the donation of $10,000 from the Joe Moon Foundation to parks and rec to upgrade of a scoreboard sign, and a resolution to rename the field in honor of Moon.

“The Board of Mayor and Aldermen wishes to recognize the contributions of Joe Moon by renaming the Waggoner Park 50/70 Baseball/Softball Field from Waggoner 3 to Joe Moon Field,” the resolution for renaming the field read. “That the change shall take effect upon posting the appropriate field name signage.”

In attendance were family and friends of the teams that played, as well as personal friends of Moon, who served as the Director of Parks and Rec from 1988 to 2000, and retired in 2015 following 40 years of service. Moon was killed in July 2016, at the age of 66, after being struck by a vehicle fleeing police.
