TEMA warns of hurricane season

Hurricane season has arrived, and while Tennessee may be far from the coast, that doesn’t mean Tennesseans are in the clear. The impacts of hurricanes can stretch hundreds of miles inland, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous flooding to our communities.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) stated now is the time to get prepared—before a storm is on the way.

Here are some key steps residents can take:

  • Discuss their emergency plan with their household.
  • Have enough supplies for the household, including medication, pet supplies, and any other items the family may need in to go bag or car trunk.
  • If anyone in the household is an individual with a disability, they will need to identify if they may need additional help during an emergency.
  • Residents make sure they have several ways to receive real-time alerts.
  • Review insurance policies and make sure personal documents (like ID) are up to date.
  • Prepare the business with a continuity plan to continue operating when disaster strikes.

“Tennessee is no stranger to severe weather—being prepared could make all the difference,” TEMA officials said.
