HOSC unveils the science behind magic

KYLE MURPHYStaff Writer

Ever wonder about how magicians are able to pull off their tricks, whether it be card tricks to pulling a rabbit out of a hat? The Hands-On Science Center will peel back the curtain to show the science behind the magic with its Homeschool Science: Science of Magic event.

The event will take place at the science center, located at 101 Mitchell Blvd., on Wednesday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the event is $7 and is open to the general public and for all ages.

“Join us for a magical twist on science at our July Homeschool Science Event,” HOSC officials said. “We’re diving into the science of magic with hands-on fun, amazing demonstrations, and experiments that will leave you spellbound.”

On deck for the event will be a science show at noon and a science activity will follow at 1 p.m.

While school has been out the summer, students have been getting hands on with science at the science center’s summer camps. Each week, the campers learn about various science topics and activities, as well as learning from those in field with guest speakers from Arnold Air Force Space, Tullahoma Utilities Authority, Shelbyville Weather, Tims Ford State Park, Motlow State Community College, NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations crew and astronaut Donald Thomas.

The science center has held other homeschool science events since the start of the summer, with the first one taking place in May that focused on environmental science and one in June that was astrology theme.

Also throughout the summer HOSC has been continuing to offer take home science kits for children. The take home science kits are supported by the Arnold Engineering and Development Complex’s AFSTEM Program and are available for free on a first-come-first-served basis every other Saturday starting at 10 a.m. To stay up to date when the next take home science kit will be announced, follow the Hands-On Science Center on its Facebook page at facebook.com/HandsOnScienceCenter.
