Population estimates could impact local funding

The Tennessee Municipal League has announced plans to provide population estimates yearly, the account for growth that happens in between the normal 10-year federal census.

City Administrator Jason Quick said he was briefed on the plans during a recent conference, noting that it could amount to more funding for Tullahoma.

“Between now and then (the 10 years between federal censuses) they are going to start giving population estimates,” Quick said, noting the mission will be accomplished by using data bases from the Boyd Center. “They are doing it off demographic models and trends they seen, admin records.”

Quick said that is important to Tullahoma because between the regular federal censues, the next due in 2030, the estimates will determine funding from the state.

“They are going to use that for revenue shifts, up or down, based on your population,” he revealed. “That includes sales and use tax, liquor by the drink, beer sales, county revenue distributions and municipal street aid fund.”

He said in March 2026 they will release the county population numbers. In July they will release the city data populations.

“We should have access to additional revenue coming from the state,” Quick said, gauging by the city’s normal growth.
