The city of Tullahoma is taking the first steps in planning for a 250th celebration for the United States of America.

The official celebration, to be held nationwide on July 4, 2026 exactly 250 years from the original July 4, 1776 release of the Decoration of Independence, will be a national celebration. However, Alderman Kurt Glick suggested Tullahoma get started on its own planning for a local or regional celebration. Presently Tullahoma hosts the Regional Independence Celebration, generally on July 3 with music, vendors, games and fireworks. The plans for a 250th celebration in Tullahoma would likely go above and beyond the normal celebration that annually draws thousands.

During the recent board of mayor and aldermen meeting, Glick suggested a resolution regarding the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and that the mayor appoint a committee of citizens to help plan out activities.

“Tullahoma had some key things it played a part of in the history of the United States, one being the Civil War, then World War II and three being the Cold War and space race,” Glick noted. “I think we focus on those three things and start them in order.”

City Administrator Jason Quick suggested the city try to do a reenactment for the anniversary, adding that such events draw big crowds.

“One thing you can consider if you want to draw some people is a reenactment,” Quick said. “They come from everywhere.”

The discussion was held during a planning session for the board of mayor and aldermen and will likely be the point of discussion in coming city meetings.
