HOSC Birthday Bash draws hundreds

The Hands-On Science Center (HOSC) celebrated its 35th birthday with the crowd numbering over 500. There was plenty to see and do for all ages. Lyle and Valerie Russel with the Middle Tennessee Raptor Center fascinated both children and adults with Hercules, Oakley, and Lucy, three owls that are part of the center’s education program. Also present was Clover, a kestrel. Kestrels are small falcons, and the only birds besides hummingbirds that can hover. There were several other science shows, and all were well attended by the crowd.
There were bounce houses, face painting, and a DJ to keep the upbeat mood going. However, the fire department stole the show when they showed up with a water cannon. Once hooked up to the hydrant, they shot the water high into the air where it then fell into the adjacent field. The kids ran in and out of the water, getting well soaked and shrieking with delight.
Inside the center were numerous exhibits for all of the senses. There is a Tennessee wildlife exhibit with a koi pond. There is a wall of gears to turn, a Lego table, various sound and visual exhibits, and a flight simulator. On another wall, kids could test their speed against different animals.
Executive Director Austin Sisco said he was well pleased with the turnout and the new memberships gained. HOSC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and community support and support of local businesses are as important as grant funding to the center’s success. Tullahoma is very fortunate to have this learning center, and the town’s appreciation was evident.
