Samantha Boggs – Dancing her way to success

L

As a business owner, it’s important to know your business. Samantha Boggs, owner of The Dance Company, certainly does. She should. She’s been at it since she was two years old. The “it” is dancing.

It’s very ironic that where she used to go for dance classes, she now owns.

The fact that this very organized and very busy mom, wife, entrepreneur, small business owner, PTO President and business manager stays on the go is an understatement. Not only does she dance but she juggles (the many things at once variety.)

Although Mrs. Boggs loves her students and her work at The Dance Company, you might be surprised to learn what her dream job is. Read on.

Tell us a little about yourself…your family, background, education, and prior work experience.

I went to Robert E. Lee Elementary, East Middle School, and Tullahoma High School. I worked at Sylvan Learning Center in Tullahoma from the time I was 16 until I graduated high school. When I moved to MTSU for college, I worked at the Sylvan Learning Center in Murfreesboro until I graduated from MTSU in 2011.  I have always loved to teach. I graduated with an Elementary Education K-6 degree. I taught magnet school in Bedford County. I have been married for 13 years and have 2 daughters (ages 10 and 7).

What sparked your interest in dance?

I have been dancing since the age of two. I am passionate about movement to music and how it is both grounding and freeing.

When and why did you purchase The Dance Company? What inspired you to purchase The Dance Company?

I never thought or dreamed of owning a dance studio, but the opportunity fell in my lap.

I was still in my teaching career and the 2 previous owners of The Dance Company (who started it in 2001) approached me with the opportunity to buy the building, business, and take over the legacy they built here in Tullahoma. At first, I was very hesitant and said no. A month or two later, God spoke to me and told me I should do it. I am so glad I took the leap of faith in 2014. I attended The Dance Company growing up and it was always a place I felt safe. I wanted to keep that safe space for hundreds of more students in the future.

What is a typical day like for you?

My typical day is so much more than just dance studio work. I am a mom, PTO president, and manage other business endeavors as well. I am blessed to have an office assistant who helps me with dance studio work throughout the week and during our operating hours.

How do you define yourself in five words?

Organized, leader, prepared, music enthusiast and focused.

Typically, who are your Dance Company students?

Our students range in age from three to seniors in high school. Our two dance studio rooms are full every day after school with just that age group.

If you had to choose another profession, what would it be?

My dream job is a The Price is Right model.

Who and how has someone been a mentor to you?

My biggest business mentor is my husband. He has guided me on many business decisions and taught me to approach challenges with confidence and humility. He has pushed me to take bold steps and balance vision with action.

To be successful, so many things must line up: ambition, talent, discipline, timing, connections, support, perseverance, and luck. Which was most critical to your business success and what’s the story?

Being overly organized has been one big key to my success, but the major key has been my amazing staff and instructors. The ladies who work with me are incredible dancers and role models to students in this community. The success of my studio is a direct reflection of the instructors. We are an amazing team and truly care about each other and every single student.

What habits or routines have contributed to your success?

I make myself available to parents 24/7. I try to resolve issues as quickly as possible and in the most respectful way I can.  I communicate dates and other needed information with parents early. I try to make being a student at our studio as easy on the parents as I can. I want every family and student to have a positive experience at The Dance Company.

The Dance Company is located at 410 West Grundy Street. Mrs. Boggs can be reached at 273 8059.
