Man shot, killed by federal law enforcement at Burger King in Frayser, TBI says
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was shot and killed Wednesday by a DEA agent at a Burger King in Frayser while federal agents served a warrant for his arrest, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The TBI said it all started just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, when the Memphis Safe Task Force went to the fast food restaurant near North Hollywood Street and James Road to serve a warrant. After the federal agents arrived, the TBI said, the man — later identified as Darrin Pigram, 41 — “reached for a gun in his waistband,” leading a DEA agent to open fire.
Pigram was shot, TBI said. The agency said he was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
In a separate statement, the DEA said the man federal agents were looking for was “known to be armed and dangerous, with a violent criminal history.”
The TBI said its agents will be “working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.” The agency said the findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for “further review and consideration.”
The DEA said there was no threat to the public.
FOX13 talked to workers at the Burger King, who said Pigram was not armed with a gun.
FOX13 also talked to a woman who said she was the man’s aunt.
“I would say that they investigate thoroughly,” said Barbara Thomas, the aunt. “Don’t tamper with the evidence, don’t tamper with the cameras, don’t manipulate employees. Just be honest and fair with the investigation.”
