Capital Outlay new justice center pitched near jail

As construction winds to a close at the Coffee County Health Department and Animal Shelter facilities, the county is making early plans for the construction of a new justice center.

Current thinking among officials is to locate a multi-story building near the Coffee County Jail on the Hillsboro Highway, just out of Manchester.

More details will be presented during the July Capital Outlay Committee meeting by Scot St. John, according to Capital Outlay Chairman Terry Hershman. St. John will show members a presentation of specific building sites and facility sizes.

Commissioner Tim Brown criticized the location as being too far out of town.

Brown suggested instead that a new facility be built behind the old jail where the Sheriff Department Motor Pool is located.

Building at the Hillsboro Highway location could potentially involve wetland issues, as well as subsurface problems.
