Carol Dougherty Obituary
Carol Dougherty passed this life to go be with the Lord Tuesday evening Jan. 2, 2024.
She passed this life unexpectedly in her home doing what she loved. She is survived by her husband of more than 47 years, Nathan Sam Dougherty, Jr.; five children: Helen Dougherty Sewell (Chris), James Dougherty (Jennifer), Kathryn Eliza(Beth) Dougherty Waller (Brandon) of Tullahoma, Edward Carmack Elder, Trey, III (Christine), Lt. Col. USAF (retired), of Huntsville, AL, and Tiffany Elder Hines, MD (Bob) of Brentwood, TN; eleven grandchildren: Patrick Sewell of Toney, AL, Irene Sewell Thomas (Brian) of Hixon, Steve Sewell of Murfreesboro, James Dougherty of Dallas, TX, Hannah Waller, Grayson Waller, and Hadley Kate Waller of Tullahoma, Kyle Elder, of Portland, OR, Will Elder of Tokyo, Japan, Claudia Hines of Knoxville, and Annabel Hines and Cole Hines of Brentwood, TN; and three great-children: Cadence and Clara Sewell of Toney, AL, and Christopher Sewell of Murfreesboro. She was a very devoted Mimi to her family.
She was born in Winchester, on May 31, 1944, and was preceded in death by her father Ernest Fred Roggli and mother Alma Louise Syler Roggli of the Farris Chapel Community near Belvidere, TN; by her two sisters: Sandra Roggli Bean of Farris Chapel and Regina Roggli Talley of Tullahoma; and by one grandson Sam Dougherty of Tullahoma. She attended Middle Tennessee State University.
She, and her husband Sam, are long-time members of Faith Lutheran Church, Tullahoma, where she was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, the Board of Fellowship, and the Endowment Board. She participated in quilting, needlepoint, Bibs for Babies projects at Faith. A life-long fulfillment to her was her participation in a Ladies Bridge Club once-a-month in Winchester and Tullahoma with friends who met faithfully for some 50 years, raised their families together, and pulled together through all of life’s events. She was an excellent cook, was a devoted and fastidious home-maker, and a great hostess. She loved tending her gardens in the yard and plants inside her home and did so with a masterful “green thumb”. She was a book club member in Tullahoma. She was retired from a working career as an Executive Secretary for Sverdrup/ARO, Inc., for Pan American, and for Schneider Services, Inc., at Arnold Engineering Development Complex, and as a Staff Secretary at the University of Tennessee Space Institute.
She was loved by her family and the many who knew her, she was empathetic and kind, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, known to be constantly and faithfully caring for them and actively participating in the children’s lives, always being there in their sports and life events.
Visitation for Mrs. Dougherty will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 5-8p.m. at Kilgore Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place Sunday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Kilgore Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Marty Nutter officiating. Burial will follow at Green Cemetery in Belvidere.
Pallbearers will be her six grandsons in attendance Patrick and Steve Sewell, Cole Hines, Grayson Waller, Kyle Elder, James Dougherty, and honorary pallbearer family friend Robert Gray. The family has requested donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Tullahoma.
