Tullahoma’s sleeping sports giant: Motlow State girls’ soccer

The Motlow State Community College girls’ soccer team has been putting up impressive seasons for a while now, and it feels like they have somewhat gone under the radar. They are coming off another amazing year where they brought home yet another championship trophy.
In 2025, the Lady Bucks went 154-2. It is the fifth season in a row where they have had at least 13 wins. Their 15th win in 2025 came in the TCCAA Region VII Championship Game against Pellissippi State Community College, where they won 2-0. This marked their fifth season in a row where they have won a region title game.
“I don’t think any of them had a chance to be complacent, because they were all pushing each other in a good way, “ said Head Coach of the Motlow State girls’ soccer program Andy Lyon, on what made his 2025 team so special. He also said that the sheer amount of talented players they had on their roster helped them greatly.
“Some games we just didn’t know who was going to be our first 11, and that is always a good problem to have.”
What has been the most impressive aspect of the Motlow soccer program’s continued success over the last few seasons is that they have done it under constant turnover. In the world of Division I college sports there is no guarantee of bringing back a fairly similar roster from the season prior due to NIL and players constantly moving schools for their “best interest”. Rarely do teams get lucky enough to have a player for their entire four-year career. In JUCO sports, that luck does not even exist. Motlow gets their players for two seasons, no ifs, ands, or buts. The Lady Bucks, despite that, find a way to compete at a high level year in and year out.
“I think it starts when you get that one really good group, and then people start seeing them, they start talking about them, players start being interested,” said Assistant Coach Katie Reid on how they are able to maintain success despite their roster constantly changing.
“We have just built off of each team’s success and them being good people. That is huge for us. Obviously, we are recruiting you for your talent, but we recruit good people, and when the good people get together, good things happen.”
Motlow this spring continued to do great things. They defeated a number of programs well up the totem pole in college soccer. In one of their games over the spring, they tied a Division I program, Belmont University.
With the belief the Motlow players have and the high character they hold, the program should continue to be elite for seasons to come. So when fall comes around, soccer fans in the Tullahoma area wanting to see some high-level soccer from good role models, go watch a Lady Bucks game.
An example of the program’s high character is in the 2025 season, they were one of the teams given the United Soccer Coaches Team Pinnacle Award. To meet the terms to qualify for the following award there are three categories of standards they had to meet. They had to have a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0, have a winning percentage of .750 or higher, and meet a sportsmanship guideline, which is based on not hitting a certain number of penalty cards in a season.
