TUA shares steps to prepare for winter weather

With Middle Tennessee put under a winter storm watch earlier this week in anticipation of this weekend’s weather system, the Tullahoma Utilities Authority (TUA) was getting prepared for what was expected to be a significant snow event. As part of their readiness initiative, they have shared tips on how to protect homes during freezing temperatures.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, Tullahoma was expected to get approximately six to eight inches of snow, alongside the southern part of Coffee County and Moore County.

“With the upcoming snow and freezing temperatures predicted, TUA encourages all residents to take proactive steps to protect your home and ensure your safety,” TUA President Allen Potter said on the eve of the winter storm.

Potter shared the following steps residents should take for when the temperatures drop:

Prevent Frozen Pipes

•        Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate.

•        Insulate exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like garages or crawl spaces.

Heating Your Home Safely

•        Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, even at night.

•        Avoid using stoves, ovens or outdoor heating devices inside your home.

•        If you use space heaters, ensure they are placed on a stable surface and away from flammable materials.

•        Close crawl space vents to retain heat.

Stay Prepared

•        Keep a flashlight, batteries, and warm blankets handy in case of power outages.

•        Charge your phones and devices ahead of the storm.

•        Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs.

•        Know where your water meter is and have the tool ready to turn it off if needed in an emergency.

In addition, TUA advised if pipes are frozen, residents should turn off their main water supply; thaw the pipes with warm towels or a hair dryer–never use open flames; and to monitor for leaks. If residents suspect damage to their pipes, they are to shut off the water immediately and contact TUA at 931-455-4515.

“TUA is prepared to respond to any utility emergencies that may arise during this winter weather event,” Potter said. “If you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”
