Crack-smoking driver runs from law

A man reportedly admitted to “smoking a lot of cocaine” before he ran from the highway patrol and then found himself trapped on a dead end road.

The suspect, Reuben Starnes Jr., 52, of Manchester, is charged with criminal simulation, theft, tampering with evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of parole, DUI, evading arrest and driving on a suspended license. His charges come after he called attention to himself that evening by turning off his lights near the Highway 55 and Oak Road. The trooper fell in behind the suspicious vehicle and tried to pull him over. However, Starnes allegedly ran several stop signs in an attempt to evade the lawman.

“He then drove down a dead end road (Hillcrest Drive) and crashed out in a ditch where he attempted to drive through a residential back yard,” the trooper revealed in his warrant.

The officer said Starnes had about seven grams of crack cocaine with him and had tried to hide part of his stash. However, hospital staff found the drugs on the hospital bed after he was taken to be checked out following the wreck.

“The driver admitted he had smoked a lot of cocaine prior to driving,” the trooper noted, adding that Starnes also had warrants against him out of Bedford County.

His additional charges come for allegedly cashing a fake money order at a check cashing business. He was arrested after lawmen saw a picture taken of him at the business and identified him.
