A $10,000 donation was recently made by the Joe Moon Foundation to the Tullahoma Parks and Recreation Department at the Oct. 14 Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. According to Alderman Kurt Glick, these funds are specifically designated for the upgrade of a scoreboard sign on the baseball field formerly known as Waggoner Three Softball Field, near Greene Field on Carroll St.
Moon was a 40 year veteran of the Parks and Recreation Department when he was killed in July 2016, at the age of 66, after being struck by a vehicle fleeing police. The impact caused his truck to roll over and burst into flames, resulting in his death. He had just retired from Parks and Rec.
Glick followed by saying, “I would like to see if the staff could look into coming up with a formal naming process for any facilities or streets or anything that we name after somebody and then guidelines to go along with it of how it’s handled after that…I think every field, street, or whatever, ought to have either a record at city hall, or a plaque…at that location (Joe Moon Field) that has something about Joe Moon. Because it’s not the field, or it’s not the street, that we’re honoring. We’re honoring the person, so I think we need to remember that.” City Administrator Jason Quick followed by agreeing and saying his team will look into drafting a protocol. The motion to designate a Tullahoma athletic field “Joe Moon Field” passed 7-0.
