Students on the Mayor’s Youth Council were recently given the opportunity to spend the day listening and learning from the city’s varying department heads.

“This initiative aimed to provide the young leaders with firsthand insight into municipal governance and operations,” according to a statement from the city.

City officials said that the day started with members of the Youth Council shadowing different department heads.

“From Planning and Codes to Parks and Recreation, these students gained insight to the daily tasks and challenges faced by each department in serving the community,” said city officials.

“As future leaders, it’s crucial for our youth to understand the intricacies of local governance and the responsibilities that come with it,” stated Mayor Ray Knowis. “By immersing themselves in the workings of our city departments, these young leaders are better equipped to contribute meaningfully to our community’s growth and development.”

After shadowing department heads throughout the morning, the council members participated in a mock board meeting led by Youth Council Mayor Brady Welch.

“The councilors deliberated on hypothetical scenarios and proposed solutions to address various issues facing the city,” stated city officials. “The day underscored the importance of engaging and empowering the next generation of civic leaders. By providing opportunities for active participation in governance, the initiative aims to foster a culture of civic responsibility and leadership among the youth.”

Knowis added “As city leaders, we have a responsibility to mentor and inspire the leaders of tomorrow. This experience was just the beginning. I look forward to seeing the contributions these bright young minds will make to our city.”
