Uselton announces run for school board
Kim Uselton has announced she is running for one of the four-year term seats for Tullahoma City Schools Board of Education. Her full announcement reads as follows:
“Hello, my name is Kim Copeland Uselton and I am running for one of the three seats of the four year term for the Tullahoma City Schools Board of Education. I am passionate about the important work in our school system and am proud of where we are and the direction we are heading.
“My fondness for and dedication to Tullahoma City Schools is that of a former student where I graduated THS with the great class of 1978, a teacher at Jack T. Farrar where I was honored to be named Teacher of the Year, an Educational Assistant at Robert E. Lee, a full-time volunteer, multiple year PTO President/Golf Booster President and parent of two boys who attended and graduated from TCS. But my most important role related to TCS is that of a board member, where I have served since 2012 and in the position of board chairman for the past four years. I recognize that TCS School Board policies provide a framework for the overall running of the school system and that these policies must comply with federal and state laws or rules. As a board member, our focus is on students and we make decisions best for them. I believe that in my role, I should be a supporter of our students, staff, teachers, and administrators. I am a champion for all things Tullahoma City Schools.
“I have earned a level IV on TSBA’s boardsmanship program and have hundreds of credits beyond what is required. I have been a moderator and a facilitator at state and national school board conventions. In 2021, I was honored to receive the All Tennessee School Board Member Award.
“Board work goes far beyond the board room. I have spent many hours “on the hill” advocating for Tullahoma students, faculty, and staff, as well as for students in public education across Tennessee. I worked closely with former board member Jessica Fogarty when Senator Janice Bowling carried a bill for us that would allow school districts to have the choice of tests due to the concerns surrounding TN Ready. I have testified before the Senate Education Committee. I routinely attend legislative gatherings and never pass up the opportunity to speak in support of TCS and voice concerns when necessary.
“I graduated from the Coffee County Leadership program in 2022. I am a board member of The Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce and am a Vice-President of the Executive Board.
“My love of education began in September of 1966 when I sat at a desk in Mrs. Emma Lou Huddleston’s first-grade room. The love continued with Marty Semmes, Margaret Rousseau, Gloria Crick, John Rickman, Ann Hickerson, Virginia Woodall, Mike Bryant, and Ann Baldwin, to name a few. I thought teachers were magic, and at 63, I know they truly are.
“Strong schools help communities thrive, and Tullahoma is no exception. Our board adopted a five-year strategic plan in 2022, and we are proud of the gains we have made and are well on our way to reaching the 2026 goals. Tullahoma is not just where I live, and Tullahoma City Schools are not just where I attended, they are a huge part of who I am.
“I would appreciate your support and vote.”
