Quiet Time

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46:10. Where do you go when you need some time with God? Maybe you have never created a space for escape or even thought about what it would be like to sit in the presence of God. At the beginning of the year, I created that space in our home – nothing fancy or elaborate – just a space for me to sit, talk and realign myself with the spirit when times felt heavy. I am the first to admit, this summer has been anything but quiet and each day started and ended with a to-do list that never seemed to squeeze in a visit to “my space”. I started to realize that sometimes the season dictates where we spend that time with our Father and it is okay to switch it up. Sometimes we can be way too hard on ourselves when we are in a season of busy or haste.

The long summer days seem to be filled with activities, time outside, mowing (if you know, you know), planting and harvesting. I realized that in those moments of time cutting flowers for our community, listening to sermons while mowing our farm, singing worship songs while cleaning the house and the sweet time spent with my kids chasing fireflies are intentional and meaningful moments with God. Maybe you too needed the reminder that you too are not far from Him, quite the opposite, you have been in the midst of His glory and creation. It seems apparent that the enemy has made it a mission to make us feel useless when we sit still – busy equates success and rest denotes laziness. Friend, slow down.

I am absolutely the pot calling the kettle black, but I am learning that purpose is not always fed by noise. Remember that through every sunset you’ve gotten to experience this summer, every vegetable you’ve grown in the backyard, every ball game cheering on your kiddo, every night around a campfire, all the sticky popsicle faces you wiped and even every lap on the lawnmower you made, God was there. The days will soon grow shorter again and the cool air will overcome the gardens, the flowers will fade and the fireflies will grow dim – then a new season will come where we will meet God in a new space. Quietness is linked to the fruit of the Spirit, particularly peace and self-control. Maybe you needed a gentle nudge today to create a space within your own home to seek God through prayer and silent retreats. The flower garden quickly became my spot over the summer simply because we were selling the fruits of our labor on our farmstand, but it is where I spent a lot of time reflecting and allowing God to speak on many situations in my life.

It was not without distraction, but it was a space we created that God used as a vessel in the most beautiful ways. There are many days I lay down at night with guilt that I was not enough, didn’t do enough, didn’t pray enough…and the list goes on. I pray these words are confirmation that you are enough for God in this season and although our prayer time, devotional time and quiet time may look different, it is our heart’s alignment that the Lord sees. It is time that we tell the enemy to back down! Satan does not have the authority to determine what justifies “good enough” for God through his schemes and lies he whispers. It is my prayer that our Father overwhelm you with His spirit in the quietness of your heart this week and may you feel Him in all that you do.

“But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

1 Peter 3:4.
