A student was killed after being hit by a truck Tuesday morning at the intersection of Country Club Drive and Kings Lane.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the child was riding his bike at the intersection in the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 25, when he was hit and killed by a dump truck.

The Tullahoma Police Department issued a statement later in the day, sharing its condolences with the family following the passing of the child, as well as stating it would not be releasing further comments.

“The City of Tullahoma is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a young child following a vehicle incident earlier today,” the statement read. “Our hearts are with the child’s family during this unimaginably difficult time. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, the city will not release or comment on any additional details. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. We ask the community to keep the family in their thoughts and to respect their privacy as they grieve. Tennessee Highway Patrol may release additional information as it becomes available and appropriate.”

Tullahoma City Schools also released a statement Tuesday afternoon, confirming that the boy killed was a TCS student on his way to school.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, classmates, and those who knew and cared for the student. Tullahoma City Schools will continue to provide support to the family, students, teachers, and staff affected during this difficult time. Grief counseling and community faith-based support will be available as long as needed,” the statement read. “Tullahoma is a close-knit community, and everyone will mourn over the loss of one of our children. Please pray for healing as we deal with this unimaginable event. We are thankful to the Tullahoma Police Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and first responders for their quick response to the scene.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no further information is available.

Tullahoma Mayor Lynn Sebourn issued the following statement:

“Tullahoma, We are devastated today over the loss of a young student in a terrible tragedy while on his way to school. I hope you will join me in praying for the family as they navigate this unimaginable heartbreak. I would also ask for your prayers for this student’s friends, classmates, teachers, and others who knew the student. Grief counseling and faith-based support have been made available by the Tullahoma City Schools, and I encourage anyone who needs assistance to reach out for support in this time of need. I have heard directly from our first responders and school staff today about this tragedy, and I want to express my sincere appreciation for the care and support they have provided.
