The month is September.

The color is purple. It is Alzheimer’s Awareness month, and Lynchburg will be hosting the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk raises funds to further the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The walk will be held on Saturday, September 19, at the Jack Daniel’s Visitors Center. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the Promise Garden Ceremony at 9 a.m., and the walk beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Participants must register and sign a standard waiver to participate. Children may participate if a parent or guardian registers and signs a waiver for the child. Strollers are allowed. Well behaved dogs are allowed at some locations if leashed at all times. Check with the specific location to confirm whether they will allow dogs. Bicycles, skateboards, and wheelie footwear are discouraged for safety reasons. There is no registration fee, however, participants are expected to make a donation.

Teams are encouraged to participate, and are often sponsored. This can lead to fun and friendly competition to see who can raise the most money. Any participant who raises $100 or more will receive an official Alzheimer’s Walk T-shirt, which will be sent to them after the walk.

Each registered participant will also receive a Promise Garden flower. Colors may be chosen to represent the participant’s connection to the disease as follows:

Blue

represents someone who is living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

Purple

is for those who have lost someone to the disease

Yellow

represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer’s disease

Orange

is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia The event will be held rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather. Whether a walker, a sponsor, supporter, or cheerleader, this is a great opportunity to be involved in the continued progress in fighting Alzheimer’s Disease. All are welcome to join!
