September is suicide prevention month

September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time devoted to recognizing suicide as the public health issue it is, raising awareness and advocating for prevention. September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, an international observance dedicated to encouraging open conversations about suicide and suicidal ideation. Talking openly about suicide can reduce stigma, encourage those struggling to reach out and potentially save lives.

In Tennessee, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24, and it remains one of the leading causes of preventable death overall. Studies have shown that almost 80% of people with suicidal thoughts show warning signs. By learning to recognize those signs, we can better respond when someone is struggling and make a life-saving difference.

Suicide Prevention Month is an ideal time to familiarize yourself with the warning signs so you can recognize and respond when a friend, loved one or even you are struggling and need professional support. Check in with those who have been affected by suicide, help build awareness and connect people experiencing suicidal thoughts with professional counselors and treatment services. If you or someone you know is experiencing depression or contemplating suicide, seek help immediately. Tennessee’s 988 Lifeline offers free, confidential support from trained professionals 24/7 by call, text or chat.

The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is a national leader in suicide awareness and prevention, not just during September, but year-round. JFI is dedicated to the awareness and prevention of youth and young adult suicide through educational programs and materials that empower students, parents, educators and communities with the knowledge and tools to identify and support at-risk youth. All programs and materials are provided at no cost, because financial barriers should never determine who receives lifesaving information.
