Lady Wildcats place second in district tournament

The Tullahoma High School softball team finished its 2026 district tournament run as runners-up. They lost to the #1 seed in the district, Lawrence County, in a forced game two after an 8-3 win, where they then lost in the championship deciding game 11-3.
Game one
The Lady Wildcats walked into the following district championship bout against Lawrence County with their backs against the wall. They managed to get to the game all the way from the loser’s bracket. They got sent to the bottom half of the bracket due to an opening-round loss to Giles County. After that, the Lady Wildcats, with their season on the line for three straight games, kept their season alive, winning all three contests.
THS had to beat the opposing Lady Cats twice since they came from the loser’s bracket, and Lawrence had yet to lose once in the district tournament.
In game one of the championship bout, the Lady Wildcats fell behind quickly. Lawrence was able to gain a 3-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Facing a deficit, Tullahoma’s offense hit another level in the top of the fourth inning, as they had one of their best innings of the season, plating sevens runs.
The huge frame from Tullahoma mostly came from a combination of three errors, two walks, and three hits. Senior Addyson Norman had a two-run single that was driven to center field inside the frame, and sophomore Avanley Metcalf was responsible for bringing home the ‘Cats’ final run of the inning from a one-run RBI double to center field.
Following the high-scoring frame from THS, which gave them a 7-3 lead, their defense’s play began to tick up. Starting pitcher in game one, senior Amaya Sharp led the charge in this. From the bottom of the fourth all the way to the end of the game, Sharp allowed just one hit and no runs.
Game two
Now that both teams had a loss in the district tournament after THS’s 8-3 win in game one, game two was the ultimate decider on who would be the district champions.
Lawrence County, through the first three innings, held a slight 4-3 advantage. Tullahoma’s run production came from a one run RBI double from Metcalf in the bottom of the first and a two-run RBI double by senior Kaitlynn Gattis in the bottom of the third. Sadly for Tullahoma, after this point, their offense cooled off.
Lawrence, after the third, scored seven unanswered runs, on their way to being named district champions.
Tullahoma will start its regional tournament run on Monday, May 11. They will travel to play Creek Wood High School. The opposing Red Hawks won their district tournament, are on an eight-game win streak and have an overall record of 24-10.
