A man faces false report charges after he tried to pull a fast one by claiming someone had stolen his identity to get a Verizon phone.
The suspect, Zackery McCullough, 21, is charged with filing a false report after he contacted police and claimed someone had used his identity at Walmart to purchase a pair of phones and a Verizon cell plan. However, in doing so he may have forgotten that cameras are everywhere.
During the investigation police were able to locate the contract signed by McCullough and then had the store pull the security footage.
“Mr. McCullough was seen on video purchasing the cell phone and signing the contract,” police reported.
When confronted by the evidence, the suspect reportedly first claimed he was confused and thought he was signing for a different account. However, police turned his story around when they pointed out that the cellphone service contracted that day was for the same phone number he had provided police on the incident report he had made out.
“I advised him that he was under arrest for filing a false report and he then stated he was just trying to help a friend out,” the police report noted.
