TBI warns of sextortion
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is seeing an uptick in a certain type of online extortion in which blackmailers claim to have embarrassing details about the victim. The online scam is called sextortion.
“Scammers claim malware has captured compromising webcam footage of recipients and threaten to send the video and pictures to loved ones unless you pay a hefty sum in Bitcoin,” the TBI advisory warns. “What makes this unique is the email can include personal details, like your name, and a Google image of your home.”
The TBI notes that the blackmailers sound like they know more than what they do about the victims’ online habits and use the threat of public embarrassment and humiliation to convince them to pay hush money.
As a reminder, the TBI says never send compromising images of yourself to anyone, no matter who they are, or who they don’t say they are. Also, don’t open attachments from people you don’t know, and be wary of opening attachments even from those you do know.
It is also a good idea to turn off/cover any web cameras when you are not using them.
