TCS middle and elementary singers receive state, mid-state honors
Some Tullahoma singers recently got exciting news as several students received mid-state and all-state honors.
TCS saw 17 students named to the All-State Treble Honor Choir, which includes fifth and sixth-grade students. After successfully auditioning and making it to the chorus, these students will perform at the Tennessee Music Educators Association Conference at Gaylord Opryland on April 12.
Bel-Aire Elementary School had seven students named to the all-state choir. Those students are Charlotte Womack, Abigail Collins, Connor Smith, Trey Cole, Kynlee Sholey, McKenzie Gurien, and Katelyn Beech. East Middle School had six students selected for the all-state chorus: McKinley Stroop, Eden Marsh, Riley Lindsay, Olivia Gaither, Irelyn Phillips, and Avery Roosendaal. West Middle School had three students named to the choir: Emma Carroll, Kate Harris and Adien Thames; and East Lincoln Elementary School’s Hazel Gibson was selected to the chorus.
East and West Middle School also had a combined six students audition successfully for the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association Honor Choir. Those students will perform at Lipscomb University on Jan. 31, with Feb. 3 listed as a makeup date in case of weather.
West Middle School saw Timothy Hanson, Hunter Hood, Reece Stewart and Emma Carroll named to the MTVA Honor Choir. East Middle School’s Fernando Reyes and Olivia Gaither were also selected for the chorus.
“This is a record number of TCS students being selected to attend this all-state honor choir for fifth and sixth graders, and to have six students named to the MTVA Honor Choir is incredible,” said TCS Fine Arts Coordinator Sarah McVey. “This is very exciting for TCS and our music program at the elementary and early middle school levels. This level of quality musicians at such a young age indicates an even stronger music program in the years to come for our upper-level music ensembles and programs.
“TCS is always well represented at the state level, but this number of students shows that our district is committed to having strong elementary, middle and high school programs,” McVey continued. “We know that we cannot have quality band and choir programs without investing in our youngest students, and these results show that TCS is doing it right.”
TCS Director of Schools Dr. Catherine Stephens echoed McVey’s sentiments and congratulated these students on their success.
“I am continually amazed by the exceptional singers in our district. We have some incredible voices across our schools, and I love seeing and hearing our choirs perform,” Dr. Stephens said. “The success of our choir programs not only comes from the dedication of these students but also their incredible directors, and it further highlights the amazing fine arts programs we have here at TCS.”
