Why social connections matter
One important but often overlooked aspect of mental health is social wellness, the ability to maintain healthy relationships, communicate effectively and feel a sense of belonging to a community. July is National Social Wellness Month, a time devoted to recognizing the importance of social connections and their impact on overall well-being.
“Social connectedness is essential for health and longevity, while isolation exacts a heavy toll on individuals and society,” according to a study published in PubMed Central in December 2022.
Social wellness influences how we interact with others, build community and manage daily stress. Strong social connections can boost mood, improve self-esteem and even support better physical health. According to the 2003-2020 American Time Use Survey, social isolation has increased and is expected to continue rising. The data showed a decline in social engagement among youth with friends and companions, increased social isolation in older adults, and both greater social isolation and lower social engagement among Black individuals.
Social isolation can have serious effects on both mental and physical health. Isolated individuals are at increased risk for anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and suicide. They are also more likely to experience dementia, low functional ability and cardiovascular disease, making human connection essential to overall well-being.
This Social Wellness Month, take time to reflect on your relationships, identify areas for growth and look for opportunities to connect with others. If you struggle with anxiety, start with one social event a month and gradually build from there. Social wellness is important in all environments, including the workplace. When employees feel connected and part of a community, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated and satisfied in their roles.
