Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing will not seek another term of office, opting to ride into the sunset after half-a-century of public service.

“After much reflection and consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection for my position as sheriff in 2026,” the veteran lawman said, clearing the way for a field of candidates to vie for his long-time position.

“I want to take this moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the community for the incredible support throughout my 50 years of public service,” he said. “It has been an honor to serve as your sheriff and work alongside dedicated individuals in law enforcement and the community. Together, we have made significant strides in ensuring safety and fostering a sense of unity.  Thank you for trusting me to serve you, and I look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of Bedford County.”
