David Hess is cancer-free and back on the mound

Former Tullahoma baseball player David Hess, after announcing that he was cancer free back in February, is back on the mound and pitching professionally.

It has been a rollercoaster for Hess over the last few years. He has been through hell and back and then some. The former Tullahoma Wildcat has had multiple cancer diagnoses over the past few years, with the latest being a form of cancer known as angiosarcoma in 2023. This put Hess’ professional playing career on hold, among other things.

No cancer is good, but angiosarcoma is especially scary. It is an aggressive germ tumor, and Hess said that where they were once looking at a 95% success rate, they were now basically looking at the flipside of that. He underwent a lung surgery and chemo to remove and shrink the mass. After this process, he later had three consecutive scans showing no trace of the disease, and Hess was then declared cancer-free in February of 2025.

“The devil can scrap, but the lord has won,” Hess said on X.

“We got scan results showing no evidence of disease, and for the first time since this whole journey started, we can officially say I’m cancer-free. Look at what god can do!”

Three years after his last professional baseball outing, Hess is back playing again. And he is not just out there pitching; he is dominating. He is currently pitching for the High Point Rockers, which are a part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and are also a partner with the MLB. Hess has appeared in 15 games for the Rockers and has pitched a total of 29.2 innings. Through that, he has a 1.82 ERA, which is the second lowest on the team.

Hess, at 32 years old, is now putting a bow on a movie-like story. The Tullahoma alumni is a true Wildcat warrior.
