Helping children find their voice

L

Although Rachel Dye grew up in Tullahoma, this young professional and entrepreneur never envisioned returning to her hometown to start her business. But she has. Read on to learn more about how Rachel, the SLP (Speech Language Pathologist), is helping young people find their voice.

Tell us a little about your background, education, and career.

I started working at Woodard’s Diamonds and Designs when I was 16 years old. Over time, I earned certifications as a gemologist and diamontologist. Initially, I aspired to be an accountant like my parents. However, during college, in quantitative analysis and business statistics class, I realized I needed to pursue a different path. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Early Education from Lipscomb University, completed leveling courses at Tennessee State University, and earned a Master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Harding University. I have worked in diverse settings—including outpatient clinics, hospitals, schools, home health, and non-profit organizations.

Why did you choose speech pathology and working with children?

Speech pathology is my true passion. I love helping children find their voice and celebrating their successes as they develop communication skills. A pivotal moment was when my third-grade teacher, Mrs. Susan Douglas, encouraged me to explore speech pathology. I immediately researched it that night and signed up for classes the next day. I am incredibly thankful for that encouragement, which shaped my career.

Why did you decide to locate your practice in Tullahoma?

I grew up in Tullahoma and never imagined I’d return to live here. After buying my first home ten years ago, I’ve loved watching my hometown evolve and grow. I’ve been asked many times if I was offering speech therapy in Tullahoma, and I finally can say yes. As a resident of over 27 years, I wanted to serve the children here—local needs require local providers.

What do you like most about working with children?

I love playing with toys and board games—children are fun and naturally entertaining. Their energy and curiosity bring joy to my work every day.

What inspired you to start your own practice?

Starting my own practice has always been a goal. I initially thought it was something for the future, but I recognized a great need for speech therapy in Tullahoma. My desire is to provide quality services to our local children and make a difference in their development.

Who are your typical clients or patients?

My passion is working with pediatric clients—helping children develop new skills and communicate effectively. Early intervention and school-aged children are my primary focus, which inspired me to create Rachel the SLP.

How do you define yourself in five words?

High-energy, empathetic, adventurous, talkative, playful.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in life?

Flexibility. Life changes rapidly and adapting with a positive attitude helps me navigate challenges more effectively.

What do you do for fun?

I love spending time with family and friends. Traveling, jewelry designing, watching movies, trying new foods, and exploring new activities—like skydiving, scuba diving, or taking cooking and pottery classes—are some of my favorite hobbies.

What do you like most about Tullahoma?

Over the 27 years I’ve lived here, I’ve watched our community grow and support each other. I love the sense of connection and true small-town spirit.

What is a typical day like for you?

My days are never the same. I see children, answer emails and phone calls, and communicate with parents and guardians. When with clients, I tailor toy and activity setups to their individual needs, making each session engaging and effective.

What is one thing you wish more people knew about your business?

That I am a local, accessible provider right here on Jackson Street in Tullahoma.

How do you maintain work-life balance?

I’m still working on this, but I prioritize setting boundaries and making time for what matters most—my family, friends, and self-care.

What is your dream vacation?

I want to see and experience as much as possible—ideally on a nine-month world cruise that visits all seven continents.

What motivates you?

My biggest motivation is knowing that God gave me the skills and passion to help children communicate and thrive in their world.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Keep going. Every success and challenge along the way has helped shape who I am. Embrace the journey and trust the process.

What was your biggest challenge starting Rachel the SLP, and how did you solve it?

My biggest challenge was spreading the word that I now have a clinic in Tullahoma. To overcome this, I joined the local chamber of commerce, networked through word of mouth, distributed business cards, and focused on building a strong social media presence.

What’s the coolest thing you have ever done?

I’ve been fortunate to experience many incredible things! Some highlights include spending over seven weeks in Africa during graduate school for a study abroad program, skydiving, earning scuba certification, and completing four marathons. I love living a life full of new experiences and look forward to doing many more.

When disappointments happen, I…?

Disappointments are part of life—they happen daily. I believe that the successes outweigh the setbacks. It’s important to pivot, reflect, and learn from each experience so I can improve for next time.

Who and how has someone been a mentor to you?

I’ve been blessed with many mentors in my life—my parents, Clay and Lisa Dye, have been some of my greatest. They’ve guided me physically and spiritually, especially with my business. My little brother Ryan, a PTA, has been my cheerleader, encourager, and steady supporter through every challenge. Though younger than me, he’s been an example and mentor whose perseverance and compassion inspire me daily. Jim Woodard has been a strong supporter in life and my entrepreneurial journey. Jason Chittum (one32designs) offered invaluable guidance as I started my business. My Bible study friends have prayed me through this process. Additionally, Mary and Daniel Thomas have helped me understand standards and laws. My friends and family have played crucial roles in my journey of growth and success.

Describe your perfect Saturday.

Since I work on Saturdays, my ideal day begins with waking up early for a delicious breakfast. I’d spend quality time doing therapy with my kiddos, complete my notes, then enjoy a movie, game, or concert with friends. In the evening, I’d snuggle with my dog, Chloe, and relax.

What habits or routines have contributed to your success?

I wake up early without fail, which allows me to make the most of each day. This routine gives me quiet time in the mornings to prepare and accomplish before heading into work.
