Lannom Library stays relevant with growth increase

Yes, there is the internet. Yes, there is Google. Yes, there is Kindle.
So, is a library relevant?
According to Coffee County Lannom Memorial Library Director Courtney Mercurio, “Absolutely! More than ever. The internet gives you information, but the library helps you find knowledge. We connect people to reliable sources and free services.”
The 10,287 (and growing daily) cardholders of the Lannom Memorial Library would agree. From July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, the library welcomed 61,151 visitors and a total of 155,969 items were circulated during the year.
Mercurio added, “We offer free access to books, technology and educational programs. Our librarians help with reference questions, computer help and readers advisory.”
In addition, the library offers study/meeting places, tutoring support, STEM kits, eBooks and audiobooks and community programs for all ages.
“For many people, we are their only reliable access to the internet. Library computers are used daily for job searches, homework, telehealth and printing essential documents,” said Mercurio.
The Library’s Summer Reading Program just concluded and saw a big jump in participation this summer. In Summer 2024, the library registered 572 readers and logged 173,795 minutes reading. Summer 2025 saw 920 readers and the readers logged 502,410 minutes reading or nearly two hours for each participant over the five-week reading program.
The Summer Reading Program is open to anyone regardless of age and is based on the honor system. This year the library offered 40 grand prizes thanks to community donations.
This past year saw increases in other library programs. There were 209 children’s programs, 58 adult programs and 554 tech classes.
Adult programs offered included Master Gardeners Info Session, Winter Garden Prep, Knitting 101, Needle Felting and hosting the weekly writers group Scribe Society.
The tech classes are very popular. The library offers a dedicated staff member who teaches the basics of technology in a one-on-one setting helping patrons navigate technology like email, social media, phone and apps.
Ms. Mercurio concluded, “It’s the one place in town that truly belongs to everyone. No purchase necessary and no membership fees-just open doors and open opportunities.”
So, in a word is Coffee County Lannom Memorial Library relevant, vibrant, welcoming and growing? Yes.
