Cedar Lane traffic light approved

Following the installation of temporary lights at the Cedar Lane/William Northern Boulevard intersection, the Tullahoma Utilities Authority (TUA) Board has approved the purchase and installation of new traffic signals.

At its April 28 meeting, TUA President Allen Potter stated that TUA owns and maintains the traffi c signals with the city in Tullahoma, and in December 2024, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection, for an amount not to exceed $475,000. Temporary lights were installed earlier this year, with the approval of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, as a permanent signal at the location was still out by a year due to supply chain issues.

“We pay for that cost upfront, it goes on the city investment account and they pay a percentage back to us to own and maintain,” Potter said.

Based on current estimates, Potter said he recommended that the board approve the purchase and installation of the traffic signal for $400,000.

Before the vote, Potter added that while TUA owns and maintains the traffic signals, it does not employ traffic engineers. Per Potter, the city consultants out to traffic engineering firms on how the signals operate and where they are placed.

“We just own and maintain,” Potter said.

He added that TUA was also not responsible for the designs of the traffic signal, or the lack of turn signals on some of the traffic signals in town, which garnered laughter from the rest of the board. Chairman Mike Stanton added that TUA was not responsible for the length of the signals at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Cedar Lane.

With no further discussion, the board unanimously approved the purchase and installation of the permanent traffic signals at Cedar Lane and William Northern Boulevard for $400.000.
