Local summer without the price

Tennessee has endless opportunities for warm-weather fun. No matter if you’re someone who likes to be on the water, in nature, or surrounded by neighbors at a fun festival, there’s something exciting to be had for everyone.
You shouldn’t feel like you have to spend an arm and a leg to make memories with your family, either. Try these low-cost or free outings: For the Nature Lovers
If your perfect summer day involves trees, waterfalls, and fresh air, you don’t have to travel far or spend much to find it. Tullahoma is surrounded by some of Middle Tennessee’s most beautiful natural escapes.
Hiking:
Explore the scenic Machine Falls Trail at Short Springs State Natural Area, where a beautiful waterfall awaits after a 1.6-mile hike. Nearby Busby Falls and Adams Falls also offer peaceful, family-friendly hikes at Short Springs that aren’t too difficult with rewarding views. Rutledge Falls is another local favorite, known for its postcard-worthy cascade and cool swimming hole.
State Parks:
Spend a day wandering the trails at Tims Ford State Park or step back in time at Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park, where shaded paths lead to ancient earthworks and rushing river views.
Other nature and science experiences:
If your family loves hands-on learning, the Hands-On Science Center in Tullahoma is an affordable, interactive option. For a bigger outing, the Adventure Science Center in Nashville and the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring in Murfreesboro offer hours of exploration without breaking the bank. If you want to be on the water amongst nature, consider a float down the Duck River.
For the Beachgoers
Beaches? In Tennessee? It’s true — you don’t need an ocean to enjoy a beach day around here. Middle Tennessee’s lakes and recreation areas offer sandy shores, swimming spots, and plenty of sunshine.
Local lakes:
Tims Ford State Park and Woods Reservoir are excellent spots for families looking to splash, paddle, or picnic by the water. Rock Island State Park at Center Hill Lake is another good option — though it doesn’t have a beach, per se — with dramatic rock formations, waterfalls, and refreshing swimming areas.
Day-trip beach:
Anderson Road Recreation Area in Nashville provides a designated swim beach and calm shoreline perfect for younger kids.
For the Sports Fanatics
If summer isn’t complete without cheering from the stands, there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to enjoy the action.
Support local universities:
Spring season college sports usually go into June. Middle Tennessee State University, Sewanee, and our local community colleges offer low-cost access to baseball, softball, and other seasonal sports, giving families a chance to enjoy competitive games without big-league prices.
Nashville Sounds: Games are often more affordable than other professional sports, and the ballpark atmosphere — complete with fireworks nights and family promotions — makes for an easy, memorable outing.
For the Arts Enthusiasts
Summer is a great time to escape the heat by soaking in local creativity and supporting community arts.
Visit the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center to explore rotating exhibits and local talent.
Catch a show at the South Jackson Performing Arts Center or Manchester Arts Center, where community theater, concerts, and special events offer affordable entertainment for all ages.
For the Festivalgoers
If you love a lively crowd and a full calendar, summer in southern Middle Tennessee delivers.
Celebrate the season at the Tullahoma Regional Independence Day Celebration, a hometown favorite filled with music, food, and fireworks.
Enjoy family-friendly fun at the Summer Fun Festival at McLaurin Farms, where activities and vendors make for an easy day out.
And don’t forget county fair season, when rides, exhibits, and classic fair food bring communities together across the region. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has spreadsheets on their website with a full schedule of the state’s county fairs.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to make summer memories this year. Find something that you and your loved ones will enjoy and spend some quality time together. No matter what you do, I bet it will be a blast.
