Southern Grace

In the South, we use the term “grace” in many different contexts. We say grace at supper time, we give grace to our neighbors, and we show grace through our actions. The term grace according to the dictionary is defined as simple elegance or refinement of movement.

But if you were to uncover the biblical description you would find that simply put, grace is the love of God shown to the unlovely, the peace of God given to the restless and the unmerited favor of God. Friend, we are all undeserving of God’s grace. “ For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Romans 5:12.

If you think about it, grace is the opposite of what the world refers to as karma. In the secular world, karma is about getting what you deserve, but in the spiritual world grace is getting what you don’t deserve and not getting what you do deserve. When sin fell upon all of humanity, we each deserved death for the penalty of our sins which ultimately separates us from God. Just as Jesus gave us life, grace breathes life back into those undeserving. We truly live every day by the grace of God. There is nothing we can do to earn it, but if you continue to grow in your knowledge of God, you will discover that grace transforms us from the inside out. You will soon begin giving grace to those in your life who don’t warrant your time, space or energy. Grace will be apparent in your lifestyle, your holiness, your conversations, your servitude, your reactions to suffering, your Kingdom work, your future and your strength. Others will look at you and wonder how you put one foot in front of the other each day, but because of God’s grace upon your life and the grace you continue to give others you will discover that those steps soon begin to get easier.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9. The truth of God’s grace is the message everyone needs to hear! How many times have you felt the nudge to just be kind to someone who has done you wrong? That is grace. Have you ever prayed for someone who despitefully used you? That is grace. Has there ever been a time that you forgave someone when they didn’t deserve forgiveness?

That is grace. Don’t ever allow the enemy to make you feel weak in moments such as those. You are demonstrating God’s love, mercy, and compassion toward humanity – a gift none of us are worthy to receive. Grace is not about us. Grace is declared all throughout the Bible, in the pits and on the mountain tops, and is ultimately revealed by our Savior on a cross. I will leave you with the very last verse of the Bible – a verse to ponder on this week as you discover the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” Revelation 22:21.
