Gary Barfield reaches 700 career wins

With a successful season for the 2026 Tullahoma High School Softball team, current Head Coach of the program, Gary Barfield, logged his 700th career win coaching in softball.
Barfield was able to hit this milestone officially with the play of his Lady Wildcats this season. The 2026 ‘Cats went 1616 overall and were able to start clicking towards the end of the season, especially come the district tournament.
After being knocked down to the losers’ bracket in a first-round loss, they rallied and made it all the way to the district finals, where they finished as runners-up. The same grit that the 2026 version of the Tullahoma High School softball team had has been present throughout a number of the teams Barfield has coached throughout his coaching career.
“Watching the players come into the program as freshmen grow and mature and become better players over the years, then sign to play in college,” said Coach Barfield on his favorite part about coaching at Tullahoma.
The Lady Wildcats program has had multiple players commit to play at the college level this season and last.
Barfield has served as the acting head coach of Tullahoma since 2013. Over that time, he has racked up over 160 wins with the Lady Wildcats’ program. However, the bulk of Barfield’s career wins came at Motlow State Community College, where he was the head coach for them from 1997 to 2011.
During his time at Motlow, Barfield led the Lady Bucks to two regular-season conference titles and an NJCAA tournament appearance in 2009. Barfield was also named the Coach of the Year in the 2003 and 2006 seasons in the TCCAA. The impressive resume that Barfield built up while coaching the Lady Bucks and his recent time coaching the Lady Wildcats led him to being inducted into the Tullahoma Sports Hall of Fame this year on Jan 31.
“It’s a tribute to all of the great players that I had the chance to coach and my coaching staff that does a phenomenal job developing our players. They truly make my job so much easier. They were Lenora Word and Jason Conn at Motlow and my current staff at THS: Whitney Morris, Erica Duke-Robinson, Aly Dixon (my daughter), Robert Barnes & Donald Metcalf. The softball booster club does an excellent job as well,” said Barfield, regarding what has helped him in getting to the 700-win mark.
As long as Barfield is at the helm of the Lady Wildcats program, some more wins and more impressive seasons are likely on the way.
