AEDC at 75: AEDC testing in late 1950s supports early space programs
A Project Mercury model is tested at what was then known as Arnold Engineering Development Center in 1959. Project Mercury, initiated in 1958, was the first U.S. human spaceflight program. In the late 1950s, work began at AEDC, now known as Arnold Engineering Development Complex, that directly supported Project Mercury and later supported Project Gemini, precursors to the Apollo space program that put man on the moon in 1969.
