Adult baseball gets underway
GRAY DEYOSports Writer
The Tullahoma adult baseball league is in full swing. They have been playing for two weeks, and this is how the standings are currently looking.
As of now, there are three undefeated teams in the league—Reds, Royals, and Shebvul Shovels. The Reds and Shovels are leading the pack, both with a 3-0 record.
Shovels
The Shovels’ first game of the season was against the Stache, and it was a defensive war. The two teams only combined for six hits. The Shovels ended up scoring the lone run in the game in the top of the last inning on a wild pitch. They produced two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth and secured a 1-0 win.
In their second game of the season, they took on the Outlaws and grabbed a 5-2 win. Their bats became livelier in this one, combining for six hits as a team.
They had their best performance in their last game against the Oakland Athletics. They won 10-0, erupting for nine runs in the fourth inning to get a mercy rule win. Their big inning was generated by five singles, three walks, one error, and one hit by pitch. They did all this before an out was recorded. Austin Johnson led the team in hits in this game with two singles. This group has shown they are a gritty team that can win in multiple ways.
Reds
The Reds have shown through their first three games that they have no problem creating offense.
In their first game against the Piñatas, they won 8-7. They trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but rallied back. They scored six runs in the bottom frame, helping them to a 1-0 record. Gage Burt, Jay Phillips, and Logan Burt all had two bases in the game for the Reds.
In the second game, they grabbed another one-run win against the Stache, winning 7-6. They were able to get a comfortable lead after the third inning at 6-2, and maintained it despite some scoring from the Stache. G. Burt led the team in total bases with four. This came from a home run shot in the second inning that scored two runs for the Reds.
In their third game, they, like the Shovels, had their best performance. They won in a 7-0 shutout against the Outlaws and did not let their opponents get even one hit.
This group is consistent offensively and has a high ceiling defensively. They should be seen as one of the best teams in the league until proven otherwise.
