Powell, Christopher join Sewanee faculty

Allison Powell of Manchester and Elizabeth Christopher of Sewanee will join the SAS faculty this fall.

As a Humanities teacher, Powell brings more than 15 years of diverse educational experience to SAS. Most recently, she has developed and taught courses online through both the Dwight Global Online School and as an adjunct instructor with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. She will teach sixth grade Humanities and tenth-grade Global Literature along with one section of Pre-Algebra.

“I look forward to returning to a brick and mortar classroom,” Powell said. “While teaching online provided added flexibility in my schedule, being back in a classroom at a school like St. Andrew’s-Sewanee that emphasizes discussion, critical thinking, and reading and writing skills is most exciting to me.”

Along with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Science in Secondary Teacher Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Powell is certified to teach in several disciplines.

Elizabeth Christopher (‘06) will join SAS as head mountain biking coach and will teach seventh grade math. An avid mountain biker and climber, Christopher was an active member of SAS’s original mountain biking team. She holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Western Governors University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science. Having taught in both Chattanooga and the Franklin County School System, Christopher has consistently achieved a Level 5 rating, the highest teacher effectiveness rating in Tennessee.

“As a St. Andrew’s-Sewanee alumna, I have a deep understanding of the transformative educational opportunities the school provides,” Christopher said. “Beyond the classroom, I bring a lifelong commitment to outdoor education and adventure, having coached teams at all levels. I look forward to integrating leadership, teamwork, and resilience into my teaching and coaching.”

Christopher and her husband, Jeff, also a math teacher, live on campus with their daughters. She is also the Assistant Scoutmaster for St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Troop 14, which has grown to more than 20 scouts and now includes female members.
