Tullahoma News brings home eight state awards

The Tullahoma News continued its winning tradition this week as the publication was the recipient of eight awards from the Tennessee Press Association for work it did in 2025 including three first place awards.

The first place finishes came in the areas of Education, Best Single Feature and Investigative reporting. The News finished first and second in the Investigative category with Brady Flanigan edging out Editor Duane Sherrill for first with his investigation into the plans for the Arnold Innovation Center which may have displaced some local ballparks.

“This story dug deep into plans of the museum and uncovered strong reasons why it would not work. Well done!” the judge said in his critique.

Sherrill took second in the state reporting on four plane crashes at the Tullahoma Airport that had happened within an 18-month period.

“Digging into TSB records and reminding readers about past crashes sheds light on concerns that pilots and airfield personnel should address,” the judge wrote.

Flanigan, who is now the executive editor for a publication in Birmingham, Ala., made it two-for-two with his feature “A hard rock with soft edges” about a local tattoo shop. Sherrill got his second award, this one for third place, with his Humor column “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts” about his trip to a haunted hotel in Eureka Springs.

Sherrill took second in headline writing, second only behind sister paper The Manchester Times which won the category. The Tullahoma and Manchester news teams teamed up to take fourth in Breaking News Coverage for the work by Sherrill, Kyle Murphy and Times Editor John Coffelt in covering the airplane crash involving a group of skydivers.

The Tullahoma news team took first in education with reports by Sherrill, Kyle Murphy, TCS Contributor Zach Birdsong and Lane Curlee.

Sports writer Gray Deyo won his first sports writing award, taking fourth place in the state for best sports coverage.
